How many visitors does your website need to make $1,000 a month?

Problem

  • $1,000 a month from ads needs ten times the traffic of your first $100 - and most site owners do not know how far off they are.
  • The visits you need swing about sevenfold by niche, because advertisers pay very different rates per 1,000 page views.

Solution

  • Visits needed = $1,000 / RPM x 1,000 / pages per visit. Your counter gives you the last number.
  • Put your own visits, pages per visit and growth into the free calculator below and it shows the month you reach $1,000.

Key points

  • About 40,000 visits a month in a high-value niche (finance, tech, health, business) at a $12.50 RPM and 2 pages a visit.
  • About 100,000 visits a month in a mid-value niche (travel, food, home, parenting) at a $5 RPM - roughly 3,290 a day.
  • About 286,000 visits a month in a lower-value niche (lifestyle, gaming, entertainment, news) at a $1.75 RPM.
  • Going from 2 to 3 pages a visit cuts the visits you need by a third - often easier than finding 50% more visitors.
  • The RPMs are estimates - midpoints of published industry ranges. Your own ad dashboard beats any average.

Our first post worked out the page views behind your first $100 a month. This one takes the next step: $1,000 a month, the point where a side project starts to look like income. It also asks the question in visitors, not page views, because visitors are what you set out to win.

The formula

Ads pay per page view. RPM (revenue per mille) is what you earn for every 1,000 page views - Google defines page RPM as estimated earnings divided by page views, times 1,000. So:

Page views a month = $1,000 / RPM x 1,000
Visits a month = page views / pages per visit

At a $5 RPM: 1,000 / 5 x 1,000 = 200,000 page views a month. If the average visitor reads 2 pages, that is 100,000 visits a month, or about 3,290 a day.

Visits needed by niche

Niche sets the RPM, because advertisers pay more to reach some audiences than others. The ad-tech company Aditude puts typical page RPMs in three bands (RPM for Publishers, 23 July 2025). At 2 pages a visit:

NichePublished RPM rangeMidpoint we usePage views a monthVisits a monthA day
Finance, tech, health, business$5 - $20+$12.5080,00040,0001,316
Travel, food, home, parenting$2 - $8$5.00200,000100,0003,290
Lifestyle, gaming, entertainment, news$0.50 - $3$1.75571,429285,7159,399

Estimates. The midpoints are our simplification of Aditude's ranges, not measured averages, and the 2 pages a visit is an assumption for a typical content site. Where your visitors live matters as much as your niche: Aditude puts traffic from the US, UK and similar markets at several times the RPM of developing markets, so a mostly South African audience usually earns at the low end of each range.

Work out your own number

Pick your niche (or type your real RPM), then enter your visits, your pages per visit and how fast your traffic is growing. The calculator shows the visits you need, what you earn now, and the month you reach $1,000 - with the amount in rands too.

Pages per visit is the lever you control

You cannot change what advertisers pay for your niche. You can change how much each visitor reads. Here is the same $1,000 target at four different pages per visit:

  • Finance/tech - $12.50 RPM
  • Travel/food - $5 RPM
  • Lifestyle/news - $1.75 RPM

326,66766,667190,477
420,00050,000142,858
  • A travel site at 1.5 pages a visit needs 133,334 visits; at 3 pages it needs 66,667 - half the traffic for the same money.
  • Good internal links, related posts and series are the usual ways to get a second and third page read.

How long until you get there?

Take the calculator's starting example: 10,000 visits a month, 2 pages a visit, growing 5% a month (about 80% a year). At a $5 RPM that site earns about $100 a month today.

  • Finance/tech reaches $1,000 in month 29 (40,000 visits).
  • Travel/food reaches $1,000 in month 48 - four years (100,000 visits).
  • Lifestyle/news needs month 69 - nearly six years (285,715 visits).
  • The same site can apply to Raptive in month 5, when it passes 25,000 page views a month (12,500 visits).

Growth rate dominates. Run the calculator at 10% a month instead of 5% and every one of those timelines roughly halves.

Reading your counter for this

The calculator needs two numbers your counter already shows: visitors and page views.

  • Pages per visit = page views / visitors for the same 30 days. On a free WebCounter report, divide the page-view total by the unique-visitor total.
  • A WebCounter unique visitor is counted once per day, so a reader who comes back on four days counts four times - which is how ad earnings see it too, because every visit brings new page views.
  • Returning visitors are worth the most: they already trust the site and tend to read more pages, which pushes up pages per visit.
  • Count real people, not bots. Google does not pay for invalid traffic. WebCounter filters bots out and counts them separately, so the numbers you type into the calculator are ones ads will actually pay for.

At $1,000 a month, look beyond AdSense

  • The RPM in your AdSense dashboard is already your share - publishers get 80% of what the advertiser's platform passes on (Google AdSense revenue share).
  • Premium ad managers often pay higher RPMs once you qualify. Raptive accepts sites from 25,000 page views a month, with at least half the traffic from the US, UK, Canada, New Zealand or Australia (Raptive eligibility). Every niche above passes that bar long before $1,000.
