When will my site pay for its own hosting?

Problem

  • Most small sites cost more to run than they earn - hosting, a domain and a plugin or two are paid every month from day one.
  • Nobody tells you when that flips, so it is hard to judge whether a site is on track or just a monthly bill.

Solution

  • Start from your visits a month and your growth - the two numbers your WebCounter report already shows.
  • Put them into the free calculator below and it shows the month earnings pass your hosting bill, and the month the shortfall is paid back.

Key points

  • With the calculator's defaults, earnings pass R250 a month in month 23 - 500 visits growing 5% a month, at $10 per 1,000 visits.
  • The site is paid back in full in month 39, after about R2,170 of hosting paid out of your own pocket.
  • Break-even needs about 1,520 visits a month - roughly 50 a day - at $10 per 1,000 visits and R250 a month.
  • Growth matters more than anything else: at 10% a month break-even comes in month 12; at 3% it takes until month 38.
  • A cheaper plan moves the date most: at R99 a month the same site breaks even in month 4.

This is the last of our first ten posts. The others worked out how much traffic it takes to earn $100 and $1,000 a month, how long traffic takes to grow, what a returning visitor is worth, what a bounce costs, what a slow page costs, how many posts it takes before Google sends traffic, whether an email subscriber beats a search visit and whether ads, affiliate links or your own product earn most. This one asks the first milestone any site has to pass: when does it stop costing you money?

Two numbers decide it

Each month your site earns visits a month x earnings per 1,000 visits, and costs hosting and tools a month. Break-even is the first month the first is bigger than the second. Because visits grow, earnings climb every month while the bill stays flat.

  • Earnings per 1,000 visits is the "session RPM" ad networks report: page RPM times pages per visit, plus any affiliate income.
  • The calculator starts at $10 per 1,000 visits - 2 pages a visit at a $5 page RPM, the midpoint of the travel, food and home tier (Aditude, 23 July 2025). Mediavine's own worked example is $12 per 1,000 sessions.
  • Both are US-heavy figures. Mostly South African traffic usually earns less, and small sites often start on AdSense, which pays less than premium networks.

What hosting costs, for scale:

  • xneelo lists web hosting at R99, R149, R279 and R439, VAT included (xneelo.co.za, checked 17 October 2026). Their page does not confirm these are monthly prices - check the billing period before you rely on them.
  • Hostinger lists $2.99 to $7.99 a month on a 48-month term, renewing at $10.99 to $25.99 a month (hostinger.com, checked 17 October 2026) - about R181 to R428 at $1 = R16.47.
  • Budget on the renewal price, not the first-term deal. The calculator's R250 a month default is an assumption: shared hosting plus a domain and a paid plugin or two.

Work out your own break-even month

Type your visits a month and your monthly growth from your counter, what 1,000 visits earn you, and what your hosting and tools cost - in rand or US dollars. The calculator shows the break-even month, the visits you need, what you pay out of pocket until then and when it is all paid back - with a chart.

Prefer a full page? Open the hosting break-even calculator on CalcSA. To see how long your traffic takes to grow, the months to 10,000 visitors calculator covers that; the page views calculator shows the next milestone, $100 a month.

Worked example: the calculator's defaults

A site with 500 visits a month growing 5% a month, earning $10 per 1,000 visits, paying R250 a month for hosting and tools. Dollar earnings are converted at the European Central Bank reference rate the calculator stores (14 October 2026: $1 = R16.47).

  • Today it earns about R82 a month - 33% of its R250 bill.
  • It needs about 1,520 visits a month to break even, roughly 50 a day.
  • Growing 5% a month, it gets there in month 23, at about 1,540 visits and R253 a month.
  • By then you have paid about R2,170 yourself; the surplus after month 23 repays that by month 39.
  • To break even within 12 months instead, traffic would need to grow about 9.7% a month.

Four more cases, same defaults except the one shown:

  • Growth of 10% a month: break-even in month 12, paid back in month 20, about R1,070 out of pocket.
  • Growth of 3% a month: break-even in month 38, paid back in month 65, about R3,640 out of pocket.
  • A R99 a month plan: break-even in month 4, paid back in month 7, about R24 out of pocket.
  • A R439 a month plan: break-even in month 35, paid back in month 56, about R7,570 out of pocket.

And with no growth at all, 500 visits never cover R250 - the shortfall is about R168 a month, every month.

Estimates. The 500 visits, 5% growth, $10 per 1,000 visits and R250 a month are assumptions, as in the calculator. Growth is the number that decides everything, and few sites grow at a steady rate for three years. The exchange rate moves the rand result too: the live calculator uses the latest ECB rate, so its months may differ slightly from these.

Earnings against the bill

Same site, defaults, earnings each month against R250 of hosting and tools:

  • Earnings a month
  • Hosting and tools
Earnings a month over 40 months from 500 visits a month growing 5%, at $10 per 1,000 visits and $1 = R16.47, against R250 a month. Earnings pass the bill in month 23. Illustrative estimate - traffic, growth and earnings are assumptions.

  • The shortfall shrinks every month but keeps adding up until month 23 - which is why the out-of-pocket total peaks at break-even.
  • Payback takes another 16 months, because the early surplus is small and the hole is about R2,170 deep.
  • After month 39 the site is earning for you: by month 40 it is about R330 a month ahead of its bill.

Reading your counter for this

Your WebCounter counter gives you both numbers the calculator starts from, so you can replace its guesses with your own. No counter yet? Get your free WebCounter counter - it takes a minute.

  • Visits a month on your free WebCounter report is the calculator's first box - type it in as it is.
  • Growth is this month's visits against last month's: 600 after 550 is about 9%. Average three or four months, because one good month is not a trend.
  • Pages per visit is page views divided by visits on your report - at a $5 page RPM, every extra page a visit adds $5 per 1,000 visits.
  • Check it every month. If your counter shows visits growing slower than you assumed, the break-even month moves out - better to know now than in month 23.
